Assessment Process
Referral
Referrals for an ADOS-2 assessment can be made by professionals such as GPs, paediatricians, speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, or directly by parents/carers. Once a referral is received, we review the case to ensure the ADOS-2 assessment is appropriate for the individual's needs and coordinate the next steps in the process.
ADOS-2 Assessment
The ADOS-2 assessment is a structured, standardised observation that evaluates communication, social interaction, play, and restricted/repetitive behaviours. The assessment involves a series of activities designed to provoke natural responses, allowing our trained clinicians to observe and assess key behaviours that are indicative of ASD. The assessment typically lasts between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on the age and communication abilities of the individual.
Developmental History
In addition to the ADOS-2 assessment, gathering a detailed developmental history is a critical part of the diagnostic process. This involves an in-depth discussion with parents or carers about the individual's early childhood development, milestones, medical history, and any concerns about social, communication, or behavioural challenges. This information provides crucial context for understanding the individual's developmental trajectory and supports the ADOS-2 findings.
Multi-Disciplinary Team
Our ADOS-2 assessments are conducted as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, ensuring a holistic and accurate diagnosis. The MDT may include professionals such as speech and language therapists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and paediatricians. Together, they review the assessment results, developmental history, and any additional relevant information to provide a comprehensive diagnostic report. The MDT approach ensures that the individual receives the most accurate diagnosis and appropriate recommendations for further support or intervention.
